CRISPR: the future of genetic engineering

Molecular biologists have discovered a precise biological surgical scissors created in nature that could be used to cut and modify DNA rapidly. The CRISPR-Cas9 system is the new-age genetic engineering tool that has been developed to revolutionize the way we understand and manipulate DNA for ourselves. This system, found in select bacteria, functions to locate and eliminate foreign genetic material that might be dangerous to the bacteria.

This tool has provided biologists with methods to accelerate the understanding of the human genome and ability to create better tools to manipulate it to their liking. According to researchers, this discovery could revolutionize cancer prevention and treatment, while also helping in the eradication of complex diseases.

CRISP-Cas9 will also provide efficient and accurate ways to induce artificial selection, and maybe even help humanity to achieve immortality. With a better grasp on the human genome and a tool such as the CRISPR system to specifically change it, researchers can manipulate biology to their choosing.
